eMail Marketing

eMail Marketing for Non-Profits

Email Marketing and communication is commonly used by non-profit organisations, often this begins because budgets are tight and eMail communications are relatively cheap when compared to other methods of contacting stakeholders.

However, as systems have improved along knowledge of the media has increased many non-profits have realised that not only is mass email communication cheaper than its traditional alternatives it is also superior in a number of ways. Here are some examples:

  • eMail Marketing has the ability to reach large audience very quickly
  • The response time via eMail marketing is quicker than traditional marketing approaches
  • Response rates are also higher (when campaigns are executed well)
  • Time taken to design, execute, send and receive emails is much faster than designing and executing a direct mail campaign.
  • eMail Marketing is helpful in creating an online buzz about your organisations message.
  • eMail marketing ROI can be tracked and analyzed easily, as can each action taken as a result of the campaign

Additionally It is easy to ‘integrate’ an email systems and websites, for example:

  • A campaign to drive traffic to other online destinations (typically your website)
  • To allow people to ‘opt in’ to your communications via your website

On some occasions of course eMail marketing is not appropriate, there are times when reports or formal communications are best left off-line. Some organisations also recognise that their target audiences do not like (or are unable) to interact via email.

For non-profits who often have at their heart multiple databases (donors, members, subscribers, contacts) email marketing is now a core function.

Tip: Your email systems are only as good as the data they contain. Assessing this quality is relatively easy, take a look at your bounce rates, open rates and your response rates. a reasonable bounce rate is 15% or lower, open rates of 30% plus are OK (more is better!), response rates depend upon your ‘offer’ or ‘call to action’, but if you are getting over 5% you are doing well.

We have executed many email campaigns and broadcasts for our non-profit clients. These tend to fall into two categories:

  1. Short term outcome communications – promoting an event, renewals or donations requests
  2. Regular ongoing awareness and informational communications

We can assist with both the strategy, planning and execution of these email communications, as well as providing reviews and post delivery round up reports.
